The Hidden Risks of DIY Mold Removal

Why Mold Isn’t a DIY Project:

If you notice mold in your home, your next step will likely be research on how to remove it yourself. A vinegar-based cleaner is often recommended, as it is anti-fungal, antibacterial, and can prevent the spread of mold. The downside to this method is that it cannot be safely used on all surfaces, and it does not kill every type of mold. A bleach solution is another common home remedy, but should be mixed with water and used with caution, as it is not safe to breathe and can be harmful to eyes, skin and clothing. Additionally, bleach will only be effective on a hard surface like tile or porcelain.

When making a DIY solution, please do your research! Many natural solutions can be dangerous when combined, and any bleach-based solution needs proper ventilation and safety gear (respirator, gloves, & goggles) while using.

Removing mold completely requires addressing the moisture issue first, then killing the spores with an effective cleaner. Improper removal can actually spread spores to other areas of your home. Worse, using the wrong chemicals or insufficient drying techniques can allow mold to return quickly.

Using DIY cleaners as a preventative measure or the treatment of small hard-surfaces areas can keep your home mold-free. However, if you notice that mold has settled on a porous surface such as drywall or carpet, consider calling in a professional to assist in the removal.
